Something to do in your time off

If you're sitting at home over break and just don't know what to do, go see National Treasure 2.  I know I can't wait.  It comes out this friday, December 21.

Hey...
There's a typo in the pertinent questions book.
#17 of Chapter Eighteen says chair stores, when it's really talking about chain stores.
Just to let you know.
Hope y'all had a good weekend.

Colorado's Bloodiest Labor Dispute?

Today we watched a documentary on the Homestead Strike in which the claim was made that the Homestead strike was the nation's bloodiest labor conflict in history. Some would claim that a labor dispute in Colorado nearly a hundred years ago was even deadlier...

A small prize to the student that first identifies the Colorado event that I'm referring to and gives a brief (two or three sentence) summary of what happened. Your findings must be posted in a comment under this posting.

Good luck!

Review Activity

Summer and Winter groups only do this blog activity. Yet it would be a good idea to read each other's work over. Double-check each other's accuracy as well and post replies if you have any!

To help you to begin thinking about and reviewing the large amount of material you have already learned this year, your blog activity this time is to pick ONE item from any one of the Review postings posts and reply to that particular post, including all required information in your comment. It might be necessary to search (library, online, etc.) to fill in any gaps not found in your textbook. Do not reply to this post.

First come, first serve. Once a topic has been picked, it can't be done again by someone else.

Due January 7th, but doing it earlier gives you more of a selection to chose from and allows your classmates to benefit from your post.

Unit 2 FRQ Activity

To be completed no later than Tuesday, September 18.

Prompt:

The American colonists were justified in declaring their independence from Britain. Assess the validity of this statement.

Assignment:

Spring Group - Write and post a thesis that answers the above prompt. It may not be the same exact thesis that another student posted. Post your thesis as a comment to this post!

Fall Group - Select one student and critique their thesis. Tell us what's good and what needs improvement. Give a specific example (or examples) of how they could improve. You may not critique a thesis that has already been critiqued. Post your critique as a comment to this post and make sure to copy and paste the thesis (+ name) you are critiquing into your comment.!

Remember, an effective thesis:
1. Fully addresses the question asked
2. Takes a position with regard to the question asked
3. Provides organizational categories that will be used in the essay

Have fun on the blog. Keep it relevant to school!

Great American Hall of Fame

Hank Aaron, Joe DiMaggio, John Elway, Marcus Allen... what do they have in common? They are members of the baseball or football hall of fames.

Who do you think would deserve to belong to the "Great American Hall of Fame"?

Think about who you believe to be the most influential Americans, in any field or industry, throughout the year. After the AP exam in the spring you will have to present one American to your classmates that you would like to see included in our very own "Great American Hall of Fame". More details on this assignment to come later!

Textbooks

Here's the skinny on your textbooks:

Unless you are on free or reduced lunch (if you are, please let me know if you haven't already done so) you will be charged $75 for the texts. Please write a check (made out to Mountain Range High School) for that amount and deliver it to Mr. Howe before the end of the school year if possible. Due to the late notice on this fee, if you did not give a check to Mr. Howe you will have the fee added to your registration fees and pay it in the fall if you haven't already done so.

Although that may sound expensive, that actual total cost of the three texts combined is $151.75. In other words, MRHS is paying over half of the cost for your text. You get to keep the text if you bought it, so feel free to mark in it, put your name in it, write notes in it, decorate it... make it your own! But please don't lose it... it will be expensive for you to replace.

Welcome!

Welcome to APUSH! This blog is being set up for a number of purposes. There will be occasional assignments posted to this blog in which you will need to post your response to the assignment here. You will be able to ask questions of your own, ask if anyone is interested in forming a study group and so on.

Please remember that this blog is an extension of the school, so act appropriately.

Also remember that this blog belongs to all of us. YOU can post your own posts, so do so when you have the need to!

Mr. Howe
